High up in the clouds, Ariana Grande’s perfume CLOUD sparks imagination and dreams with its youthful praline fragrance.
But coming down from this dreamworld – does CLOUD stand out among the rest? In this review, I will be giving you my first impressions, initial scoring, and detailed Ariana Grande Cloud Perfume Review to help make your decision on whether CLOUD will be your go-to daytime fragrance.
As an avid Ariana Grande fan and purchaser of her other fragrances ( Moonlight & REM ), I was excited to add CLOUD to my growing collection. Initially, I was struck by its holographic box with Great posed in her ‘Sweetener era’ look, CLOUD was floating up to my expectations and beyond.
CLOUD’s clear baby blue bottle is simple but its holder takes center stage as a puffy white cloud. I was quick to spritz this on before running errands and was immediately struck by its fresh scent. With tones of coconut and praline, I immediately thought of spring mornings and felt a sense of youthfulness with hints of lavender and pear. Was this to become my go-to perfume?
While Grande’s earlier perfumes are girly and sweet, CLOUD starts off with a woody orchid musk but then strongly settles with creamy coconut scents and praline sweetness. This is a scent that is fun and carefree, a popular hit with fans and perfume lovers.
It’s no wonder CLOUD won Fragrance of the Year at the 2019 Fragrance Foundation Awards . Her competitors were Britney Spears’ Prerogative, KKW Body, Victoria’s Secret Tease Rebel, and Wild Spirit Fragrances Driftwood Eau de Parfum – CLOUD beat some tough competitors.
The slightly lower score here to this is one of Great’s more expensive October scent of her other 7 fragrances (£ 27.55 30ml Amazon – Whereas Thank U Next is priced £ 19.99) However, comparing to the wider fragrance market CLOUD is such a steal and perfect to buy as a present or even as a gift to yourself.
Grande’s CLOUD bottle feels childlike and has a weak link to Grande’s sophisticated image in 2018. Compared to Grande’s later perfumes ( Thank U Next & REM ) CLOUD doesn’t link to any of Grande’s pop hits, which makes the cloud-shaped bottle almost meaningless (Sorry Ari!).
CLOUD by Ariana Grande Eau du Parfum
“I love the peaceful beauty of clouds – they are both magical and comforting at the same time. I wanted to create this amazing feeling of hope and happiness, and share it with my fans everywhere. That’s what CLOUD is for me – a beautiful, optimistic scent to give love and comfort to anyone that sprays it.” – Ariana Grande
Yes, the packaging could have had a better link to Grande’s discography, however, launched in 2018, CLOUD was a complete rebrand of Grande’s earlier perfumes ( Ari, Sweet Like Candy, Franki, and Moonlight ).
What do you mean by re-brand? Great had been in the perfume game since 2015 and by 2018 she had released 4 other fragrances, all in pyramid-style bottles and bright pom-poms attached to them – a very sweet and youthful image. While CLOUD still remains youthful, its plain bottle and new holder is shown Great heading in a new direction.
Big’s rise to fame was thanks to the hit Nickelodeon kids show, Victorious, Big played a red-head ditsy named ‘Cat’ and was quick to show off her incredible voice to fans of the show. She started to release music and quickly rose to the top of the charts. By 2018 Great was an international pop star with her Nickelodeon days far behind her.
As a pop star Grande had a distinct image at the time; short skirts, thigh-high heels, sparkly bracelets, cat ears, and of course her signature high ponytail.
She mixed her sexy on-stage persona with cute elements like cat ears and girly ponytails. Her earlier fragrances remained cute and playful but CLOUD clearly showed Great wanted to link to her more mature sound of her Sweetener album (2018).
But Why Clouds?
The pop star has made it clear on her social media her love of puffy, white clouds. She even has it tattooed on her finger!
Coffee supergiant, Starbucks was quick to market on this shape as they partnered with Ariana Grande and launched themed ‘Cloud Macchiatos’ in 2019 – an amusing pun to Grande’s Starbucks link (Iced Caramel Grande anyone?)
Grande’s Instagram is full of serene images of clouds and she clearly has loved them during her rise to stardom.
Does Pete Davidson Have Anything to do With CLOUD?
It has been speculated that CLOUD links to Grande’s then-fiance at the time, Pete Davidson. Gossip columns ran wild with conspiracies in 2018/2019 on whether Davidson was the inspiration behind CLOUD.
They both had matching cloud tattoos on their finger at the time of CLOUD at release. However to dampen this theory is the fact that Grande’s perfumes generally take time to launch and her marketing team are eager to see how her perfumes will be a hit with fans, instead of focusing on Grande’s love life.
While Grande’s love life comes and goes, CLOUD has stayed relevant due to its marketing around ‘hope and happiness’ something that Grande has depended on due to her turbulent years dealing with anxiety and PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder).
Right Now Let’s Really Dive Into The Actual Juicy Stuff…The Fragrance
As mentioned above, when I first saw the box I was brought back to my teenage days of fangirl excitement seeing Grande’s image on the front and its stylish flash box in front of me in holographic colors.
Held in place by its puffy white cloud bottle holder, CLOUD Its bottle is sky blue and its lid is shaped as another cutely shaped cloud.
According to Ulta Beauty Grande’s CLOUD “is an uplifting fragrance. Inspiring. Dreamy. Playful.” CLOUD to keynotes are:
- Top – Lavender Blossom, Juicy Pear and Bergamot
- Middle – Coconut, Praline and Vanilla Orchid
- Base – Sensual Musks and Cashmere
This fresh scent can lean towards masculine fragrance if it were not for its tones of lavender blossom and pear. CLOUD lasts up to four hours, and believe me when I say you will get lots of compliments wearing this perfume, so keep it close by!
How Many Sprays is Enough?
Like with any perfumes, you can play around with how many sprays work for you. The recommended spray is 3-4 times but it really is up to you! For me, I use one spray on my neck and one on each of my wrists then I rub them together.
What About Ariana Grande’s Other Perfumes?
Now with Grande’s large growing perfume collection I won’t go through each perfume in detail but Grande has released 8 perfumes (two of which are limited editions.) Ari, Sweet Like Candy (plus Sweet Like Candy limited edition), Franki, and Moonlight all have signature ‘marshmallow’ sweet scents and pyramid style bottles, plus cute pom poms attached to the bottle.
After CLOUD, Thank U Next, and REM also have a holder designed around the name of the perfume. CLOUD was the first step in making Grande’s perfumes collectibles and in later years fans still have this perfume on their shelves.
CLOUD Quick – Fire Review
Below is my ‘quick-fire’ review to help you make your decision if your head is still ‘up in the clouds’.
- Longevity: Four hours
- Best season to wear: All year round (but best during the day!)
- Scent type: Creamy praline and musky woody tones
- Best worn: Daytime, casual, dressed up, brunch
- Price: One of Grande’s more expensive perfumes (£27.55 30ml Amazon )
- Top notes : Lavender Blossom, Juicy Pear and Bergamot
- Middle notes : Coconut, Praline and Vanilla Orchid
- Base notes : Sensual Musks and Cashmere
Other Alternatives to Consider
Thank U Next – Grande’s next perfume release after CLOUD has tones of coconut and pear – a similar daytime scent. Thank U Next is popular due to its coconut musk smell and favorite perfume to wear in the heat
Berberry’s Her – A similar price to CLOUD, Berberry’s Her was released in 2018 and has a stronger scent with tones of strawberry, blackberry and woody notes. This sweet fragrance works well as a daytime perfume due to its tones of musk and vanilla.
Estee Lauder’s Sensuous – Despite this being a luxurious brand, Sensuous is still affordable and has a close comparison to CLOUD . Sensuous gives off a warm, feminine scent with tones of amber, magnolia and sandalwood. This is a long-lasting fragrance that will last throughout the day.
Question – What’s Ariana Grande’s Latest Perfume?
Answer: Since CLOUD’s 2018 release, Large has released Thank U Next (2019) and REM (2020) both of which have the same style with a plain bottle and creative bottle holder designed around the theme of the fragrance.
God is a Woman is the latest release in Grande’s perfume range. Launched in 2021, Grande’s latest perfume has gone through another re-brand with the perfume designed in a minimalistic matt gray holder and lavender bottle. With the fragrance having fruity scents and musky tones, this is one to keep an eye on.
Question: What are All of Ariana Grande’s Perfumes?
• Ari (2015)
• Sweet Like Candy (2016)
• Franki (2016)
• Moonlight (2017)
• CLOUD (2018)
• Thank U Next (2019)
• REM (2020)
• God is a Woman ( 2021)
Question: What Other Perfumes Are Similar to Ariana Grande CLOUD ?
Answer: CLOUD has a striking resemblance to Grande’s later perfume, REM with its musky tones and sweet scents.
However, if you are edging away from the Great perfume collection try Bath and Body Works In the Stars (cheaper too!). In the Stars is a slightly lighter fragrance and has fruitier tones. With a blend of sandalwood musk and amber, this perfume has a fresh scent similar to CLOUD.
The closest comparison is Maison Francis Kurkdjian Baccarat Rouge 540 Eau de Parfum (a high cost compared to CLOUD ). This floral fragrance is suitable for either men or women and has a sweet, woody scent.
This is a fragrance to have if you want a more mature scent, whereas CLOUD has a younger demographic that is targeted towards and its praline tones make it a youthful fragrance.
Question: What Sizes Does CLOUD Come In?
30 ml (1.0 oz)
50 ml (1.7 oz)
100 ml (3.4 oz)
Ariana Grande Cloud Perfume Review: Final Impressions
Celebrity perfumes can be hit or miss, however, Large has broken this stereotype and made her collectibles perfumes now and CLOUD rose above the rest. With clever marketing (thank you Starbucks!) this mature and feminine scent has stayed extremely popular since its 2018 release.
CLOUD became an award-winning scent in 2019 and fans were eager to see what else Grande had in store. She did not disappoint, with more ‘collectable’ fragrances, CLOUD was one of the first with the ‘cloud’ shaped bottle holder.
As a long-time fan, I was eager to add this scent to my Large collection too. It was refreshing to have a perfume that is too overpowering to use when I want to run errands. CLOUD impressed me but I wished the design linked more to Grande’s music instead of her love of clouds.
As Grande said, this fragrance really does create a feeling of “hope and happiness” – if you want compliments and a cute bottle on display in your room – you’ve found the right perfume.
